Drawing was and has always remained central to his work. But by 1982 painting in oil had superseded printmaking as his working method of choice. In 1981 travels through France and Italy to Greece renewed his interest in ‘landscape’, although it was not until he resigned from full-time teaching that he was able to concentrate on this fully.

Walking holidays in Yorkshire and the North Pennines led to a move to Cumbria where he lived for twelve years.
“Walking became a major passion, be it high summer or the depth of winter I always took a sketch book with me. Even in the wild open spaces of Nine Standards Rigg there could always be found a small ‘nook or cranny’ that offered enough protection from the wind and cold, just enough to facilitate the quickest of sketches.”
