GREECE 1981 - 82
The Greek island Hydra lies due south of Athens just off the Peloponnisos coast. It's impossible to paint landscapes here without including the sea, so I guess that these little paintings rekindled my interest in both landscape and seascape painting. I made sketchbook studies and lots of small, square format, paintings in watercolour and gouache. These I later brought together into a large single sheet. I painted the Greek Gouaches in the studio on my return to England. The smaller Beachscapes made the following summer, I think of purely as memoirs.
